Στους 26 ανέρχονται πλέον οι νεκροί στη Γουατεμάλα, μετά την κατολίσθηση στο προάστιο Σάντα Καταρίνα Πινούλα, λίγα μίλια έξω από την πόλη.

Οι Αρχές της Γουατεμάλας ανέφεραν ότι 600 άνθρωποι αγνοούνται, ενώ εκατοντάδες μέλη σωστικών συνεργείων σκάβουν για να απομακρύνουν όγκους λάσπης και βράχια σε μια απεγνωσμένη προσπάθεια να βρουν επιζώντες.

Η σφοδρή βροχόπτωση των τελευταίων ημερών είχε ως αποτέλεσμα ένας χείμαρρος λάσπης και βράχων να θάψει δεκάδες σπίτια.

Σύμφωνα με τον Νταβίντ ντε Λεόν, εκπρόσωπο της εθνικής υπηρεσίας συντονισμού των επιχειρήσεων για την αντιμετώπιση φυσικών καταστροφών (CONRED), από την κατολίσθηση έχουν καταγραφεί επίσης τουλάχιστον 32 τραυματισμοί. Ο Νταβίντ ντε Λεόν είπε στο Γαλλικό Πρακτορείο ότι οι αρχές είχαν συστήσει πέρυσι στις δημοτικές αρχές να μεταφερθούν αλλού προληπτικά κάτοικοι περιοχών που θεωρούνταν ευάλωτες, διότι από την περιοχή όπου ζούσαν διέρχεται ένα ρέμα.

Κατά την περίοδο των βροχών, που άρχισε τον Μάιο και διαρκεί ως τον Νοέμβριο, ο απολογισμός των θυμάτων πριν από την τωρινή κατολίσθηση ανερχόταν ήδη σε 8 νεκρούς, σύμφωνα με τον επίσημο απολογισμό. Σύμφωνα με τις αρχές της Γουατεμάλας την περίοδο των βροχών του 2014 είχαν καταμετρηθεί 29 νεκροί, δύο αγνοούμενοι, 25 τραυματίες, είχαν πληγεί συνολικά 655.000 άνθρωποι και είχαν υποστεί ζημιές 9.000 σπίτια.
